I cancelled Ipsy

Sigh. You read the title, its true. After being a subscriber of Ipsy's $10 monthly "glam bags" since September of 2014 I recieved my last bag last week after deciding to cancel.  When I first signed up for Ipsy I lived in the middle of nowhere, was on a seriously tight budget, and wanted some monthly mail to keep me from splurging on crappy drugstore makeup that I didn't even like.  For that purpose it worked well.  Now, I live in a big city with an Ulta about 5 minutes from my apartment.  My Ipsy bag was no longer keeping me from spending money on makeup once I moved to an area with more options to buy things.

I think that if you're really into trying new products and you don't like spending a lot of money to test things, Ipsy and similar bags are a great options.  I was excited to receive my package every month and I know I'll miss getting them.  I had to finally admit to myself that I just wasn't that into the products I was receiving anymore.  I had retaken the test on the website, switched preferences, rated things, etc and there were several months in a row when I was just "meh" about what I had recieved.  I started keeping a separate drawer of sample products that I needed to try out in order to keep myself accountable for using stuff I actually received instead of just throwing it somewhere until the next bag came. The bags are always cute too and fun to collect but now I have like 20 and nothing to put in them, haha.  I think the last kicker was the fact that even though there were a few products I really liked, the chances of me actually repurchasing stuff was really slim as most full size products were out of my price range and I'm a cheapskate. Sooo...

That all being said, I DO have a post planned where I talk about the samples I got through Ipsy over the past year or so that I would (and will) repurchase.

School has been kicking my but lately, but I have lots and lots of posts planned including an Etsy soap haul, all my ulta goodies, a foundation review (or two!), and my ebay haul that I've been collecting for for ages.

That's it for this post today, I mostly just wanted to chat with y'all since I hadn't posted in a bit. :)

Hope everyone's enjoying their February!

Review + Swatches: City Colors Eyeshadow Trio Falling Leaves

City Colors Cosmetics
eyeshadow trio in Falling Leaves
Hey everyone! Today is a review on the City Colors Cosmetics eyeshadow trio in Falling Leaves.  I received this is my January ipsy bag and have fun trying it out.  I'm actually kind of phasing out of eyeshadows for the most part.  I tend to go for a lot more neutral colors these days and don't put much variation in my everyday looks.  I liked the oranges of the Falling Leaves trio because they were still on the "neutral" side kind of with just a bit of warmth.  This is a perfect palette for fall obviously but I think they're great winter shades too.

Swatches
This trio contains a matt pumpkin base shade, a light peachy orange, and a dark bronze brown shade.  Overall, I thought these were nicely pigmented, especially the darker color, which also happens to be my favorite of the three.

Application:
These pigments apply pretty smoothly.  The matte orange isn't quite as pigmented as the other two so it does take at least two layers to get the rich orange.  I didn't find a difference in color payoff between using primer and not using it.  At least the few times I've used them so far, I haven't had an issue with much fallout which is definitely a plus for me.

Longevity:
When I wore these colors on Friday, I used Thank Me Later eye primer. After 4 hours, I found these colors still looked the same with no creasing.  After 8 hours, there was a bit of creasing.  This may have been the fault of the primer. Today, I have applied the colors without primer and at three hours, color still looks good.  I'll update at the end of the the night if it showed creasing without using a shadow primer.

Price:
City Cosmetics lists this trio on their website as $5.99 which I think is a great price and is pretty accurate as to what I would say its worth. Its better than some of the cheapo brands but not quite as pigmented as higher end eyeshadows like Too Faced. For $6, this little trio is a pretty good deal and a great compromise if you're looking for a convenient eyeshadow palette.

VERDICT:
3.5/5

I thought this was a nice little eyeshadow compact with three shades that compliment each other very nicely.  I have red hair, green eyes, and fair skin and the colors worked very well on me.  They blended fairly nicely although the matte shade was a little bit harder to work with and not as smooth.  Pigmentation was midrange, I've seen worse but I've definitely seen better.  Would I buy this again? Maybe. If I found a good deal on the price then sure.  I have a couple other products from City Colors Cosmetics so I feel like I'd try other eyeshadows based on this review.

UP NEXT: e.l.f bb cream review for pale skin and NYX HD concealer.   Also thinking about a weekly Indie "try out" post, but I'm to ideas! Tell me what you want to see. :)

My ipsy bag for this month is so cute. Canvas, says "Contents: Pretty Important Stuff".  This month wasn't particular exciting.  The bag features a gel eyeliner from bellepierre, leave in conditioner, an eye shadow brush (can never have too many of those!), a moisturizer (that smells amazing-like dryer sheets haha), and a little card with samples from urban decay of lip primer and two glosses.  If any of these products blow me out of the water I'll do a review but lately I've just been getting mediocre things.  At some point i'll post my all time favorite products I've received from ipsy in a compilation type post.

On a side note: Congrats to all the graduates! High school and college kids alike have been attending graduations this week, my fiance included. (yes, i'm engaged!!!).  I hope everyone enjoys their summer. We are taking a day trip to myrtle beach on monday, i'm so ready.  Plans for the summer? Tell me!

October Favorites + Ipsy

Hey there everyone! I didn't do a post for the October ipsy bag so I thought I'd do a quick little favorites post which includes some of those items, and show you what I got last month, I'll be getting a November back in the next couples days.  Also stay tuned Friday for a post about my new brown hair and what I did for Halloween (for reference next year perhaps).

October Favorites:

  • Coastal Scents Revealed 2 Palette $19.95- This is supposed to be kind of a Naked dupe, which I don't have, but its a warm-tone eye palette with gorgeous plush shadows. When I ordered the palette I expected them to be more brown tone but they're a bit more purple/pink toned that just your basic browns and blacks which I've decided I quite like. I got this on sale for $9.95 but its gone up a bit since then. I've used this every.single.day. since I got it. Best purchase I've ever made this year so far.
  • Figs&Rouge Hand Cream $6.56 - Got this with the October ipsy bag and I'm addicted. I've been keeping it in my backpack. It smells kind of citrus-y with a hint of sweet. Considering the great price I think I might actually get this again when it runs out.
  • Carmex $1 - Its my night-time balm go to.  Plus it doesn't taste the greatest and it really helps me not bite my lips.
  • Deluxe Infitiy Crown brush $6.99 - You might recognize this from September's bag. I previously said it might be a bit large but I've used it religiously since then and I think I've got the hang of it. I need more brushes!!!
  • Rue 21 Runway $10 - Its kind of sour-sweet smelling. I'm so bad with describing smells, but I love this. This is my second bottle and it lasts forever. Plus I'm a bio anth major so I dig the cute skull packaging.
  • Rue 21 Studded Bag $10 - I just started using this again after buying it a couple years ago and packing it away. Its starting to rip at the handles but I love it so much I must find another! The store doesn't sell them anymore so if anyone knows where I can get a similar one from cheapish let me know!
  • Nicole OPI in Feeling Very Cherry - Also from the October bag, its a deep oxblood color and I've been wearing it on my fingernails and toes all month. The perfect fall color.
October Ipsy Bag:
  • Model Co. Volume Eyes - Just a basic big brushed mascara. Nothing special, not water proof.
  • Lip Gloss - Just not a fan of lip gloss and this color didn't really suit me.
  • epice exfoliating scrub - I've only used this one but I really liked how fine the scrubby particles are. I would assume its sugar. I quite liked this.
  • The bag itself I just loved. Its a plasticy material in a gorgeous color. Just though it was super cute.

September 2014 Ipsy Glam Bag!

After being wait listed since I signed up in July I was soooo excited to get my first bag mid September.  I know thats its kind of a thing to trade products with others for things you may want but didn't get but I think I like the idea of just sticking with what I get. I like trying new things and since I don't wear makeup as much as I used to I'm not usually looking for particular products.

So September's theme was street style and the products came in this cute silver bag with little studs on it, just my cup of tea. Here's just a quick rundown of the items I got and my thoughts on the ones I've tried so far.
  • *Crown Brush Deluxe Infinity Shadow/Crease Duet brush, $6.99 - Brushes were just something I never got into until the last year, and I don't have many at that aside from a few e.l.f. $1 cheapies so its safe to say I don't have a lot of judge by. I have used this brush and think maybe that it's slightly large for my eye shape but its very very soft and haven't had a problem with shedding yet.
  • Pacifica Natural Waterproof eye pencil in Gun Metal, $5 - I haven't tried this yet but I'm intrigued with the idea of a silver eyeliner. It sounds like fun!
  • *Cailyn Art Touched Tinted Lip Gloss in Love Affair, $19 - This color is absolutely gorgeous. I was disappointed it doesn't last as long as a lipstain but its very easy to apply, not messy and very bold. It doesn't have that sticky texture which is the main reason I don't normally wear lip glosses. I don't think I would want to pay twenty bucks for this product so it might be slightly over priced, but I do enjoy using it.
  • Mitchell and Peach luxury hand cream, $14 - I love how thick this feels when I'm rubbing it in but how light it feels coming out of the tube. Its super moisturizing and soaks in quickly.  The scent is a bit heavy. Very sickenly sweet and peachy.
  • Nourish Organic Face Moisturizing Organic Face Cleanser, $3 - I haven't tried this one yet either, perfect travel size.
    Total Value: ~$48
*indicates full size product.

Overall I'm really happy with my first bag and am excited to see what next month's theme will be. Yay for not being a completely broke college student this year. I love getting to treat myself a bit.
